For the less adventurous traveler looking for a place to relax, to enjoy Cuba´s excellent weather and glorious beaches, Cayo Guillermo is the place to go to.
Both Cayo Guillermo and Cayo Coco resorts are part of the Jardines del Rey Archipelago, with visitors having to pass through the latter to get to the relaxing resort by a causeway connecting the two islands.
Coverning just 13 square kilometres, Cayo Guillermo is much smaller than neighbouring Cayo Coco, but equally frequented by visitors.
What stands out here are the white sandy beaches, the azure blue, transparent sea, and ... that´s about it! It is sufficient to make Cayo Guillermo a hugely popular tourist destination, with four all-inclusive tourist resorts full of visitors who are looking to get away from it all and relax.
The all-inclusive resorts organise a wide variety of activities for tourists, such as boat trips, snorkling, or even a brunch at sea!
This is probably Cuba's number one fishing destination. You can go deep sea fishing on large boats that depart from the hotel piers or head for one of the many freshwater lakes for less ambitious fishing. Prize catches include marlin and barracuda.
Diving is another big attraction of this island and there are several diving centers to choose from, whether you are looking to try diving for the first time or already have some diving practise. The marine life includes plenty to see and discover due to the proximity to the Bahamas Trench, including snappers and Atlantic Spadefish, caves, tunnels and various corals.
The mangroves of Cayo Guillermo host flamingos and pelicans, and the waters contain a great diversity of tropical fish and crustaceans. Being known as the 'Island of Flamingoes', don't be surprised to see a flamingo or two walking just a couple of metres away from you!
Cuban citizens are not allowed on the island, with some exceptions, so don't expect much opportunity to get to know the locals.
